Q: Why is Powerball changing?

A:  Powerball is enriching the game with more chances to become a millionaire, bigger starting jackpots and better overall odds of winning a prize.

 

Q:  What are the changes to Powerball?

A:  The starting jackpot is increasing from $20 million to $40 million, the 2nd place prize is increasing from $200,000 to $1 million and the overall odds are better at 1 in 31.8 as opposed to 1 in 35. 

 

Q:  Are the number of balls changing?

A:  The number of white balls players can select remain the same at 1 through 59.  The number of red balls is decreasing from 1 through 39 to 1 through 35. 

 

Q:  Why did the cost of a Powerball ticket increase from $1 to $2?

A:  The price was changed to $2 to support the added value of the new changes to Powerball.

 

Q:  When will Powerball be changing?

A:   Powerball changes will take place starting Sunday, January 15, 2012, and the first drawing with the changes will be Wednesday, January 18, 2012.

 

Q:  Are these changes just for Powerball in Arizona?

A:  Powerball is changing in all of the 44 participating states.

 

Q: Will the odds change?

A:  $2 Powerball will have better overall odds of winning a prize at 1 in 31.8.

 

Q:  Is the starting jackpot still $20 million?

A:  The starting jackpot has doubled from $20 million to $40 million.

 

Q:  Are the other prize levels remaining the same?

A:  The 2nd place prize is increasing to $1 million.  If you purchase the Power Play option, the 2nd place prize will be $2 million.

 

Q:  Are the days of the drawings changing?

A:  Drawings will still be held every Wednesday and Saturday evening.

 

Q:  Will the cost of adding Power Play increase?

A:  Power Play is still available at $1 per play.

 

Q:  Is Power Play changing?

A:  Yes, there no longer will be a separate Power Play number drawn as a multiplier.  Players who select the Power Play option and win, will automatically have their prize increased according to the prize table shown below.
