Arizona Claims Six of Eight Nationwide $1 Million Powerball Second Prizes in Wednesday Night’s Draw

PHOENIX (April 27, 2012) — Wednesday night’s Powerball draw resulted in eight

$1 million Powerball second prize tickets, six of which were sold in Arizona.

All six $1 million winning tickets were purchased at a QuikTrip located at 6702 W. Glendale Ave. in Glendale. The winning numbers were 4-25-29-34-43 PB 29.

One of the six winning tickets was claimed yesterday by a Glendale resident who wished to remain anonymous. Arizona Lottery executives are still eagerly awaiting the other tickets to be claimed.

These six wins bring Arizona’s count of $1 million second prize Powerball wins to a total of 10, since the new $2 Powerball game launched on January 15, 2012. To date, Arizona winners have included two Tucson residents, a Phoenix resident and a couple from Fort Mohave.

“It is incredible for Arizona to have six $1 million second prize Powerball wins in one night, and even more astounding that all six tickets were purchased from the same retailer,” said Karen Bach, assistant director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “Arizona is tied with New York for having the most $2 Powerball second prize winners since the game launched and we expect to be congratulating more Arizona millionaires this year than ever before.”

The new $2 Powerball game offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million.

The next $2 Powerball draw is Saturday, April 28 for an estimated jackpot of $40 million.

Tucson Resident Claims Arizona’s Fourth $1 Million Powerball Second Prize

Winner Becomes Second Millionaire in Tucson since the New $2 Powerball launched in January

A Tucson resident has come forward to claim Arizona’s fourth $1 million Powerball second prize from the drawing on April 11.

The $1 million winning ticket was sold at the Fry’s Food Store, located at 2480 N. Swan Rd. in Tucson. The winning numbers were 16 - 23 - 42 - 44 - 47 PB 2.

This is the second $1 million Powerball second place prize to be won by a Tucson resident, since the new $2 Powerball launched on January 15. Arizona’s first $1 million winning ticket was claimed by a Tucson resident, who purchased it at a different Fry’s Food Store in Tucson. The second $1 million winning ticket in Arizona was claimed by a couple from Fort Mohave, who purchased it at the Smith’s Food & Drug in Fort Mohave. The third winning ticket was purchased at an Albertson’s in Phoenix and claimed by a Phoenix player.

This Tucson resident, who chose to remain anonymous, has been playing the lottery for years and was thrilled to discover that one of his three Powerball Quick Picks for the April 11 draw had five matching numbers. The player said it was his lucky day since he usually selects his own numbers consisting of family birthdays, but went with Quick Picks this time instead.

“It is exciting to award a second player in Tucson the $1 million prize,” said Karen Bach, assistant director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “Arizona is one of only eight states to boast at least four second place $2 Powerball winners since the game launched and we expect to be congratulating more Arizona millionaires this year than ever before.”

The new $2 Powerball game offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million.

Phoenix Resident Claims $6.4 Million The Pick Jackpot Just Before His Birthday

Arizona’s Own Jackpot Game Winner Adds to Excitement of Record-Breaking Mega Millions Weekend

PHOENIX (April 2, 2012) – A Phoenix resident, Alex A. Defiore, claimed the $6.4 million The Pick jackpot today from the drawing on Saturday, March 31. The Pick is Arizona’s own jackpot game.

The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased by Defiore, along with four other tickets, at a Circle K located at 6322 North 12th Street in Phoenix.

Defiore discovered he held the winning ticket on Sunday, just two days before his birthday.  He tried calling his wife five times that morning to tell her the good news, but could only leave her messages since she was still asleep. Defiore said that he is happier for his wife than for himself, because the win will enable her to retire.

Defiore chose the cash option and received more than $4.1 million before taxes.

“It was an honor to award such a hefty birthday gift to Mr. Defiore at the Arizona Lottery office today,” said Karen Bach, assistant director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “This is shaping up to be a big week for Arizona Lottery winners, as we are also expecting to award Arizona’s three $250,000 Mega Millions winners with their prizes this week.”
