Arizona Lottery’s 21st $1 Million Powerball® Second Prize Claimed

PHOENIX (Mar. 26, 2013) – The Arizona Lottery announces that the winner of the

$1 million Powerball second prize from the drawing on March 23 has come forward. This is the 21st $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012.

Craig Krause, an Arizona snowbird from Colorado, purchased five Quick Pick tickets on Friday, March 22 from the Fry's Food Store located at 542 E. Hunt Highway in Queen Creek. Krause, who works in the construction field, has been traveling to Arizona for the last three years.

“I don‘t have any plans for the money because I wasn’t expecting to be a winner,” Krause said. “I’ll probably pay off some bills and share with my family.”

Krause checked his ticket Monday morning and was excited when he noticed the five matching numbers on the top line of his ticket. Krause yelled to his friend in the next room to come look at his ticket, but his friend did not believe him until he also saw the five matching numbers.

Krause and his friend picked up an Arizona Lottery brochure and discovered that five matching numbers were worth $1 million. Krause and his friend then went back to his house to get their other friend, so both of them would be with him when he received his check at the Arizona Lottery Phoenix office.

“Hearing about our newest Arizona millionaire was a thrill,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “We are excited that the number of new millionaires statewide is continuing to grow and we only expect that trend to continue.”

Nationally, the new Powerball game has passed a significant milestone, creating more than 550 millionaires at the game’s second prize level.

Along with generating more millionaires, the recent Powerball enhancements also have resulted in an increased number of winners overall. Players are winning more money more often, due to the improved overall odds of the game and the increase in ticket sales. In fact, there have been more than 117,000 Powerball winners in Arizona during the last week alone.

The increase in Powerball sales and wins in Arizona also means more money being returned to important state programs. Arizona Lottery dollars are allocated to fund a wide variety of public projects and programs throughout Arizona that fall under four main pillars: education, health & public welfare, economic & business development and the environment.

Previous Arizona Lottery $2.5 Million The Pick™ Winner Claims $1 Million Powerball® Second Prize

Marks 19th $1Million Powerball Second Prize Win in Arizona

PHOENIX (Mar. 8, 2013) – The Arizona Lottery announces Diane and Kerry Carmichael as the winners of the $1 million Powerball second prize for the draw on Wednesday, March 6. Remarkably, this is the couple’s second Arizona Lottery win following their $2.5 million win on The Pick in December 1995.

Diane purchased the winning Powerball Quick Pick ticket at the Arizona Lottery’s Phoenix office located at 4740 E. University Drive in Phoenix. Kerry had also purchased the couple’s winning The Pick ticket at the Arizona Lottery office 18 years ago. “Good things come in threes. Two down, one to go,” Diane joked.

The Carmichaels are retired and reside in Tempe. They are still being paid a $125,000 annuity for their 1995 win, which will expire in December 2014. They plan to consult with their financial advisor, but say they will “resist the urge to splurge.”

This is the 19th $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012. Nationally, the new Powerball game has passed a significant milestone, creating more than 500 millionaires at the game’s second prize level.

“This is an incredible win for the Arizona Lottery, especially since the ticket was purchased at our office by a previous Lottery winner,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “Arizona has seen a substantial increase in the number of new millionaires statewide since $2 Powerball launched and we only expect that trend to continue.”

Along with generating more millionaires, the recent Powerball enhancements also have resulted in an increased number of winners overall. Players are winning more money more often, due to the improved overall odds of the game and the increase in ticket sales.

In fact, there have been more than 30,000 Powerball winners in Arizona during the last week alone. This includes a $10,000 Arizona winner for Wednesday night’s draw, who purchased the winning ticket near the Arizona–California border at River Lagoon Resort located at 50078 Ehrenberg Parker Highway in Ehrenberg. This ticket is yet to be claimed.

These Arizona Powerball wins come on the heels of the record-breaking $587.5 million Powerball jackpot winning ticket being sold at the 4 Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills, and claimed by a Fountain Hills resident on December 7, 2012.

The increase in Powerball sales and wins in Arizona also means more money being returned to important state programs. Arizona Lottery dollars are allocated to fund a wide variety of public projects and programs throughout Arizona that fall under four main pillars: education, health & public welfare, economic & business development and the environment.

The next Powerball draw is Saturday, March 9 for an estimated $150 million jackpot. Tickets can be purchased at any Arizona Lottery retailer.

Black Pearls Yield $50,000

Robert Knisely of Fort Mohave is home on leave from his position as a civilian air traffic controller in Afghanistan.  He’ll return there in March.  In the meantime, he enjoys playing Arizona Lottery Scratchers.

Recently, he and his brother were in their local Safeway store and passed by the Lottery’s instant ticket vending machine.  His brother pointed to one of his favorite games, but Robert decided he liked the look of Black Pearls and bought two. He took them home to scratch and was sure he’d made a mistake when, after scratching them, one of the tickets showed him to be a winner of $50,000. He asked his brother to check it.  The first thing his brother did was turn the ticket over to be sure it was real, checked it thoroughly, and they both went into shock.

Robert took the ticket back to the store to have it validated.  When the clerk handed him the paperwork, he knew he really was a winner.  He plans to pay off all of his bills before returning to Afghanistan and put the rest of it away for the future.

The winning ticket was purchased at Safeway, 4823 S. Hwy. 95, Fort Mohave.
