Arizona Lottery Reports Record-Breaking Mid-Year Results

Lottery sales pacing 10.7 percent over previous fiscal year, benefiting Arizona residents and retailers

PHOENIX (Jan. 29, 2013) — The Arizona Lottery announced its mid-year results today with sales pacing a record-breaking 10.7 percent over fiscal year 2012 and currently totaling more than $325.3 million.

The exceptional year-to-date Arizona Lottery sales are due to a significant 6.4 percent increase in the sale of Scratchers tickets and an even larger 18.5 percent increase in the sale of draw game tickets.

“The incredible Powerball® jackpot run earlier this fiscal year resulted in a huge increase in Powerball ticket sales statewide and produced an Arizona winner of the record-breaking $587.5 million jackpot,” said Jeff Hatch-Miller, executive director of the Arizona Lottery. “This surge in Powerball sales heavily contributed to our strong mid-year sales figures.”

As a result of strong Lottery sales, the State of Arizona has received more than $72.5 million in net proceeds year-to-date. Arizona Lottery dollars are allocated to fund a wide variety of public projects and programs throughout Arizona that fall under four main pillars: education, health & public welfare, economic & business development and the environment.

In addition to the Arizona Lottery’s transfers to the State this year, more than $200 million has been paid out to players in the form of prizes, not including the additional $293.8 million that was paid to Arizona’s Powerball jackpot winner.

Lottery retailers large and small also have benefited from the record Lottery sales, earning more than $21.4 million in commissions year-to-date, which many of them rely upon to support their businesses.

“This has already been a remarkable year for the Arizona Lottery, which can be largely credited to the introduction of new, innovative products that continue to attract players and deliver sound results for Arizona Lottery beneficiaries throughout the state,” Hatch-Miller said. “We are confident that our strong sales trend will continue through the end of the year, as we work aggressively toward exceeding 2013 goals.”

Fountain Hills Resident Claims $1 Million Powerball® Second Prize Winning Ticket

PHOENIX (Jan. 8, 2013) – The Arizona Lottery announces that the $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Fountain Hills was claimed today by a Fountain Hills resident. The winner, Lance Johns, matched all five numbers excluding the Powerball for the draw on Saturday, January 5.

Johns is a regular Arizona Lottery player, but says that he almost didn’t buy a ticket for this Powerball draw. He always plays one Quick Pick and four lines of his own numbers consisting of significant family numbers, like his and his wife’s birth weights. He and his wife are both retired and plan to use their winnings toward the purchase of a new home and new cars.

Johns purchased his $1 million winning Powerball ticket at the Circle K located at 17125 E. Shea Blvd. in Fountain Hills. The winning numbers were 26 – 30 – 49 – 51 – 54 PB 25.

This win comes on the heels of the record-breaking $587.5 million Powerball jackpot winning ticket being sold at the 4 Sons Food Store also in Fountain Hills, and claimed by a Fountain Hills resident on December 7, 2012.

“It is truly remarkable to have another top prize winner from Fountain Hills, especially so soon after the record-breaking jackpot win,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “We are thrilled that Powerball produced another new millionaire in Arizona. The money won in Arizona helps the economy and businesses here in our state.”

This is the sixteenth $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012.

$2 Powerball offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million.

Happy Holidays!

Pamela McCarty of Show Low began buying the Holiday Treasures Scratchers as soon as it came out in time for the holiday season. She never won anything big, but would frequently win anywhere from $10 to $50 -- until this week. She stopped at the station to get a drink, and while paying at the counter, on an impulse, pointed to the ticket and told the clerk, “Give me one of those, maybe I can win some Christmas money.”  She had no idea she’d win a lot more than just Christmas money.

Pamela continued on to work, and when she got to the office, scratched the ticket and was convinced she was seeing things. She couldn’t have won $100,000, but she had. She quickly showed her boss and then called her husband. He had her read off the number of zeros on the ticket to be sure it really was $100,000. She then took the ticket to a local store to be scanned, where the clerk had her fill out and sign the back of the ticket before she left the store.

She and her husband drove down to Phoenix and came to the Lottery. They were still in a state of disbelief until they saw the check.  The couple plan to pay off some bills and put the rest into a retirement account.
